I titled this “Giant in the Land” because it encapsulates many of the problems and issues I am currently facing . The large creature in this picture, “The Giant”, symbolizes my fear, anxiety, lack of confidence, toxic people in my life, everything that is stopping me from reaching the big city (my dream, bright future, success) in the distance, not unlike the monster in my painting “Where do you think you’re going?”. This seems to be a reoccurring symbol in my work although it takes on different forms. Probably because I am still dealing with the same issues. I haven’t slayed the dragon so to speak. I am confident I will in due time.
In this piece, the city appears as a positive symbol unlike my painting “Big, Big House” where the city represents the busy, crowded, loud and toxic environment that I currently find myself in. This is because at the time I was creating this particular piece, I was submitting my work to a few galleries in Manhattan and had hopes that my career would start there. I am honestly not a big city person. I prefer the quiet rural towns on the outskirts of the major cities.
This artwork began as a very rough sketch on the computer:
Originally I was just going to paint it in acrylics, but then I decide it might look interesting to add torn papers to the monster, to create contrast and make it pop. I feel like I succeeded. What do you think?
