To be honest, I am not that interested in poetry, and I really don’t know that much about Mr. Tennyson other than some very beautiful and inspiring quotes of his like:
“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, ‘It will be happier.'”
“The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions.”
“I must lose myself in action, lest I wither in despair.”
Although those quotes are beautiful and inspiring, they weren’t the inspiration behind this painting. When I see an interesting photograph, I feel compelled to paint it. When I found the picture below of Mr. Tennyson on wikipedia, I had to paint it. I just love the expression on his face and the lighting. Just a beautiful photograph.

This photograph was taken in 1869 by an amazing photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron. You can view her work here.
